Apartment & Flat Moves: The Small Stuff Nobody Warns You About

House moves get all the attention, but apartment moves have their own headaches and honestly, some of them are worse. No driveway to back a truck into. A lift that's either too small for the couch or "out of order" the one day you need it. Neighbours who are lovely right up until boxes are blocking the hallway. If you've ever moved into or out of a flat, you already know.

We've done more apartment moves than we can count at Truckify Logistics, from third-floor walk-ups to high-rises with strict move-in time slots, and there's a pattern to what actually goes wrong (and what makes a move go right).

Check the building rules before you check anything else

A lot of apartment blocks and complexes have their own rules about moving booked lift slots, restricted moving hours, a specific loading zone, sometimes even a deposit for potential damage to common areas. None of this is obvious until someone in the building office mentions it, usually at the worst possible moment. Call ahead. Ask your body corporate or landlord directly whether there's a moving policy, and get it in writing if you can. It's a five-minute phone call that saves you from turning up with a full truck and nowhere to park it.

Measure before you love it

That gorgeous couch might not survive the corner of your new hallway. Before moving day, measure the doorways, the lift (if there is one), and any tight turns on the stairwell then measure your biggest pieces of furniture against those numbers. It sounds excessive until you're the person standing in a stairwell at 9am realizing the wardrobe is two centimetres too wide.

Lifts are a shared resource, not a private one

If your building has a lift, chances are other residents need it too, not just for your move. Book a slot if the building allows it, and if it doesn't, try to schedule your move for a quieter time of day. Nothing slows a move down like waiting fifteen minutes for a lift to come back down, again and again, with a neighbour's shopping trolley in it every time.

Stairs change the game entirely

No lift? Everything changes. Heavy furniture needs a proper plan, not just brute force think about which pieces can be broken down (bed frames, wardrobes, dining tables) so they're lighter and narrower to carry. This is where a crew who's actually done walk-up moves before earns their keep. It's a very different skill from loading a driveway.

Pack with the building's quirks in mind

Narrow hallways and small landings mean oversized boxes become a liability fast they're harder to angle around corners and easier to bump into walls (yours or the building's). Slightly smaller, well-packed boxes tend to move through apartment buildings far more smoothly than the giant ones you'd get away with in a house.

Parking is half the battle

In a lot of apartment complexes and city blocks, finding somewhere to actually put the truck is its own mission. Scope this out ahead of time is there a loading zone, visitor parking, or a spot you can reserve? If street parking is your only option, try to move during a quieter window so the truck isn't blocking traffic or getting ticketed while you're carrying boxes.

Be a good neighbour about it

A quick heads-up to the neighbours a day or two before especially if you share a hallway or thin walls goes a long way. People are far more patient about a bit of noise or a blocked corridor when they knew it was coming.
